HD is not just a bike, it's a lifestyle. Just like Hogryder said, the clothes, Xmas ornaments, boots, belts, goggles, etc. They are expensive and to some people it shows what their priorities are. They can live in a shack, dress in rags, and own a HD.
When people hear you've bought a bike, they ask is it a HD? Alot of people don't know any other bikes, and even ask if it's a HD when they are looking at your bike and it says, Suzuki, Honda or Yamaha right on it! They haven't got a clue, but are trying to act like they do.
My So had his Yamaha Royal Star at the All Harley Drag Race. We were pit crew for some friends. The emblems were taken off by the previous owner and he hasn't had a chance to decide what he wants, the emblems back on or a custom paint job. This HD guy said "nice bike" then his friend said it's a Yamaha. The first guy just covered his mouth and laughed. He thought it was a Road King! He wouldn't have said nice bike if he had known. I just laughed.
The other brands have come out with clothes and accessories but it hasn't taken off like HD.
Go to any mc event and what dominates? HD.
The HD owners should be glad that we don't all ride HD. Imagine the price of a HD if that was the only bike anyone bought. They ought to thank us instead of putting our rides down. (Hodryder excluded--he's really a Savage at heart)
